Our Community
Senecaville is a
small village in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio located approximately
12 miles southeast of Cambridge. Our main industries are agriculture and
tourism. Seneca Lake, which is part of the Muskingum
Watershed Conservency District (MWCD) draws thousands of visitors to and
through our village each year. Although most of our visitors are here in
the summer months to enjoy the fun and sun at Seneca Lake, many also come in
the fall to witness the breathtaking views of fall foliage.
Senecaville's most distinguished citizen is Robert T. Secrest.
"Bob", as he was known to most of us, graduated from Senecaville
High School and Muskingum College. He taught school in Senecaville and
Cambridge and was Superintendent of Schools in Murray City when he ran for
State Legislature in 1930. He served in the Legislature until 1932 when
he was elected to Congress from the 15th District. Bob served in
Congress until 1942 when he resigned his office to serve in World War
II. Bob was the first Congressman to resign to serve his country and was
commissioned as a Lt. Commander, serving on Admiral Nimitz's staff in the
Pacific. After the war he ran for reelection to Congress but was
defeated. He worked in the Library of Congress from 1946 until 1948 when
he was reelected to Congress. Bob remained in Congress until 1954 when
he was appointed by President Eisenhower to the Federal Trade Commission for
seven years. In 1961, Bob returned to Ohio to serve as State Commerce
director under Governor DiSalle. He was reelected to Congress in 1962
serving several more years in Washington and State government until his
retirement in 1977. Bob was a fierce advocate for Senior Citizens and
Veterans. The Secrest Senior Center in Senecaville was named in his
honor. The Rolling Hills School District also named one of the new
elementary schools in his honor. Secrest
Elementary is located just outside of Senecaville.
